Telling Nativity story with art

We are not a religious family but with Christmas around the corner, we have obviously a lot of conversations related to the birth of Jesus. This year I decided to tell the Nativity story to my Little Rascals using art and famous paintings. It turned out to be a very illustrative and engaging way of explaining all the mysteries. Like who were Mary and Joseph whose toy-versions travel around our living room trying to get to the Bethlehem. Or why is baby Jesus lying in a manger? Or why there are shepherds in so many carols? Or why do Magi bring presents to children (say hello to the Spanish Christmas tradition!)?

First, we read the story from a Bible for children. And then we retold it with art.

I used a list of paintings I found in The Guardian. I printed and laminated all the cards. Together we put the paintings in the right order and matched the names and descriptions.

After that, we learned how different artists show the same moment in a very different way.

And then N decided to paint her own Nativity scene ;-)
